Žuta Tabija, or Yellow Fortress

Žuta Tabija - Yellow Bastion

Žuta Tabija, or Yellow Fortress, is part of the old defenses of Sarajevo. I suppose it must have been painted yellow at some point? It is high up in the neighborhoods above the city, and there are spectacular views from it.

Dad takes a beautiful photograph while Mom says, "Step closer to me! No, no! Don't lean that direction..."
At least as fascinating as the view, though, is watching the (mostly teenage) crowd watching the view on a clear, springtime afternoon.

When did Isaac turn into a Mini-Ed? He has changed SO MUCH. Completly unacceptable!

In the first two pictures you can see the enormous cemeteries (which are identifiable as white patches on the Sarajevo landscape). ALL of those tombstones have death dates from 1992-1995. Death tolls are disputed, but most concede 100,000 deaths in Bosnia during the war, including 12,000 in the siege of Sarajevo alone. Of these 12,000, the most conservative estimates confirm 5,600 civilians, including over 1,000 children.

That's right next to us! I keep meaning to go up it on the way to school but never quite get round to it. I won't be taking Emma, you know what I'm like with her and heights.... Spectacular views though, I'll get there sooner or later.
