If you hike up high enough into the hills, you discover that Sarajevo was once a walled city. Now, the central shopping and business area is down at the bottom of the hill along the river, where it has almost always been, but as I understand it, these walls were built a few centuries ago after the Miljacka River flooded its banks and sent Sarajevans scurrying up the hill. It doesn't flood all that often, though, so downtown Sarajevo eventually moved back down and left city walls high up in the hills.
