Time to get a new clock?

Lovely clock, huh? And it keeps perfect time. When we moved in, the landlord asked if we wanted it to chime, and we said, "Sure!" So he fiddled with something inside and it started chiming beautifully, on the hour and again on the half hour. Then, about a week ago, something happened (someone knocked the clock? the clock began to resent our demands for chimes? who knows!), and while it still keeps perfect time, it chimes, um...oddly.

For example, this morning at 9:00, it stuttered. The chimes went something like this:
1, 2,...3,4,5,6,7,...............and, ten minutes later, 8...9.

At 4:30, the chime for the half hour was, inexplicably, three chimes instead of one.

We don't know what our landlord did to turn on the chimes, so we can't turn them off, and we don't know how to explain to him what's going on so that he can turn them off, either. So our clock continues its odd chiming.

I figure in our house, time doesn't march, it tangos.

Maybe that's why he had it turned off because it drove him nuts.
