Children's Week: Memorial to the Children of Sarajevo

The first week of October is Children's Week in Bosnia.

It is tradition in Sarajevo for every kindergarten and preschool to make the trek during that week to the memorial to the children of Sarajevo who were killed in the war.

I was sure that her teacher would talk about the meaning of the memorial, but I wasn't sure Eleanor would understand any of it, so on the way to school I told her about the children who were killed in the war and the memorial fountain that has been erected to honor them. "Mom," she said, "I like to hear about the children, but it scares me to hear about the war."
